Title pages in red and black, some woodcut initials and decorative headpieces. With the engraved bookplate of the "Earl of Roden K S.P.," presumably Robert Jocelyn, the first Earl of Roden and also with the ownership signature of Colin N. Edmonson. The old leather binding is quite worn, top board detached. Title page of the first volume is browned, else internally a near very good copy, with only minor scattered light foxing

Ed. stereotypa. No editor shown. 288pp, with ornamental headpieces. Bound in 1/2 black morocco, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt, raised bands, gilt decorated spine. Binding rubbed at extremities, small chips in spine, former owner's bookplate, some scattered light foxing. A former owner has glued a photograph to the flyleaf. A nice copy, attractively printed on good paper.

Boston Bibliophile Society 1901 Hard Cover Very Good Howard Pyle, James Fagan, W. H. W. Bicknell, et al
1901/04. 8 volumes bound in 10. All bear the attractive bookplate of Kirby Flower Smith. Numbered X of 467 copies. Vol. III includes an additional page noting that it is a "Complimentary Copy Printed for KIRBY FLOWER SMITH". Laid in are contemporary copies of correspondance between the Bibliophile Society and D. C. Gilman and K. F. Smith concerning the edition. A letter to Gilman dated Feb. 19, 1902 includes the sentence "While it has not been the policy of the Society to make any complimentary copies of the Horace, I have, in this instance, arranged to have one complimentary copy made for Dr. Smith. . . ." The set is nicely printed, decorated with many attractive drawings and engravings in the Art Nouveau style. illustrated by Howard Pyle, Bicknell, and others, with the plates in two states. The first state, before lettering, is signed by the artist. The first book published by the Bibliophile Society. The set is in almost fine condition. The backstrips are lightly browned, as seems usual with this set. There are some small tears in the backstrips, the worst being 1/4 inch tears at the top of Vols. V and VII. I see no other flaws.
